My dad loved visiting newly constructed buildings on weekends with me and my mum when I was a kid. We moved from a 1-bedroom to a 5-bedroom home as I grew up. The city of Urumqi has expanded from 80 km² to 520 km², and China has built 500-600 million new buildings in the last 35 years, including over 300 million apartment units, with a population of only 1.4 billion of us ;) Real estate investment has been the most popular type of investment in China for the last 30 years. I can't help but wonder, when people left a building or architecture, don't they also become decorative ornaments for individuals, cities, and countries? They are symbolic, tall, perpendicular, solid, and valuable decorative objects, just like the rings on my finger.
