Hua Wang - SELF-PORTRAIT

Self-Portrait offers one of the artist’s most straightforward meditations on existence and freedom. In this work, a body transformed into grapes—perhaps through mutation or myth—reclines in a pose reminiscent of a reclining Buddha upon electronic data storage hardware destined for obsolescence.

The languid corporeality relinquishes the possibility of extinguishing the technological fervor of accelerationism. The Dionysian impulse, once oriented toward transcendence and unity, now assumes a deeper form of ecstatic detachment. Through intoxication, the body numbs itself, choosing withdrawal into the virtual temporality of social media over confronting the paralysis of reality. Within the dream-within-a-dream constructed by platform capitalism, a new form of existence emerges.
